Indonesia executed eight convicted drug smugglers including Australian nationals and a Brazilian national by firing squad shortly after midnight on Tuesday, promoting angry reactions from Australia and Brazil.
The executed drug offenders included two Australian nationals, four Nigerian nationals, one Brazilian man and an Indonesian man. A Philippine national was granted a stay of execution, the New York Times reported.
The bodies of the two Australian nationals were transported to Jakarta from the execution island of Nusa Kambangan from where they will be repatriated to Australia, according to News.com.au.
“We respect Indonesia's sovereignty but we do deplore what's been done and this cannot be simply business as usual,” Reuters quoted Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott as saying. Abbott announced that Australia would be recalling its ambassador to Indonesia.
Brazil recalled its ambassador in Jakarta after an earlier execution of a Brazilian in January, according to Reuters.
“Given the lack of a satisfactory reply to our appeals, this has to be evaluated to decide what attitude we will adopt towards Indonesia from now on,” Brazil’s deputy Foreign Minister Sergio Franca Danese told Reuters.
