One of the two suspects who tried to attack an event exhibiting caricatures of the Prophet Muhammad in Garland on Sunday had linked himself to Islamic State on social media just before the attack.

The attack took place near the Curtis Culwell Center in Garland, Texas on Sunday. The two suspects, Elton Simpson and Nadir Soofi, were armed with assault rifles and protective body armor. They intended to open fire at the 200 people attending the event exhibiting caricatures of the Prophet Muhammad, Reuters reported.

The suspects drove up to an entrance blocked an officer and an unarmed security guard inside a police car. They opened fire wounding the security guard. The police officer returned fire with his service weapon, killing both suspects, according to Reuters.

Suitcases and more rounds of ammunition were found in the suspects’ vehicle, the Wall Street Journal reported.

The suspect Elton Simpson linked himself to Islamic State in a tweet just before the attack, CNN reported. He was convicted for making a false statement to the FBI in 2011 about his plans to join Islamic militants.
