A freak accident sent 3 elementary students to the hospital after an AC unit fell on them in the Central district of Hong Kong.

One girl was admitted to hospital with serious injuries and the other two were kept for observation for a few hours before being sent home with their parents.

The group of 20 students were walking back from a field trip with their teachers when they passed beneath an air conditioning unit which was being lifted by a crane. The rope holding the unit snapped and it fell down, hitting the three students and shattering the sidewalk.

One man has been arrested in connection with the accident and the construction company was fined for not following safety protocols. The area wasn’t cordoned off properly, nor was there any protective scaffolding to shield pedestrians from falling debris.

A water pipe beneath the sidewalk was also severely damaged and continued to pump water into the street.

Thankfully no one was killed. Humans just don’t bounce back like cartoon characters do when they have a piano dropped on them.
