A Garland traffic officer single-handedly took down the two gunmen who opened fire outside of a Muhammad cartoon contest in Texas Sunday night, Garland Police Department spokesman Joe Harn said during a Monday press conference.

He did not identify the officer and said the investigation is ongoing.

“Under the fire he was put under, he did a very good job and probably saved lives,” Harn said of the officer.

At 6:50 Sunday evening, contest attendees were leaving the Curtis Culwell Center when two gunmen wearing body armor pulled up to the drive-in entrance that police had blocked off.

A Garland officer and an unarmed security guard got out of their squad car, and the gunmen opened fire with assault rifles. A fire exchange lasted about 15 seconds. The security guard -- later identified as Bruce Joiner -- suffered a wounded ankle. He was treated at a hospital for his injury and was later released.

Officials evacuated the convention center and its surrounding buildings while they searched the suspects’ car. Harn said responders used detonators to access all parts of the vehicle for investigation.

The evening’s contest featured controversial cartoons of the Muslim Prophet Muhammad. The event’s organizer paid $10,000 for extra security, Harn said.
