Burundi women protest Nkurunziza third term

Hundreds of women have held a mass protest in Burundi against President Pierre Nkurunziza running for a third term.

This is the latest demonstration against the move which has received domestic and international condemnation.

Nkurunziza’s presidential bid has sparked the worst unrest since a peace deal ended an ethnically charged civil war 10 years ago. His opponents say it is against the constitution.

Nineteen people have been killed in demonstrations since the president announced his candidacy on Friday (May 8)

Burundi’s leading opposition figure, Agathon Rwasa, has called for the parliamentary election in May and presidential election in June to be called off.

He says it will be impossible to hold elections which are peaceful and free.

More than 50,000 people, mostly women and children, have fled Burundi to neighbouring Rwanda, Tanzania and the Democratic Republic of Congo in the past month according to the United Nations refugee agency.
