Demonstrations against the Southern Copper Corporation’s mining project, Tia Maria, in the Arequipa region of southern Peru turned violent Wednesday, with clashes between protesters and police. Four police officers were seriously injured in the disturbances. This follows the death of two demonstrators protesting the US$1.4 billion project, which many fear will pollute local agricultural lands. The protests are now in their 46th day. teleSUR
