The 'Cuban Five,' made up of Ramon Labanino, Gerardo Hernandez, Antonio Guerrero, Rene Gonzalez and Fernando Gonzalez, visited the tomb of late Venezuelan President, Hugo Chavez at the Cuartel de la Montana barracks, in Caracas, Monday, accompanied by Venezuelan Vice President Jorge Arreaza. Rene Gonzalez said that Chavez was Cuba’s best friend and the best friend of the Cuban Five, recalling that Chavez was the first non-Cuban president to speak about their situation to the UN and a person who always greeted their families with love. The five heroes were given keys to the city on Monday as well as honorary medals in the city's Bolivar Square, and were greeted by hundreds of Cuban doctors, who had turned out in support. The Cuban Five were arrested by the FBI in 1998 and charged with espionage due to their investigation of the activities of terrorist groups against Cuba. They served up to 16 years in United States prisons before the last members of the group were released last December. teleSUR
