An Australian Islamic college has denied allegations that its principal placed a ban on girls running out of fear they would lose their virginity.
Al Taqwa College is under investigation by the Australian education ministry after claims that its principal, Omar Hallak, prohibited female students from taking part in running events.
The claims come after a ex-teacher from the college wrote to the education minister, James Merlino. According to the Age, the teacher wrote that Hallak “holds beliefs that if females run excessively, they may ‘lose their virginity.’”
Al Taqwa College has denied the claims, issuing a statement saying that “female students at Al-Taqwa College participate in all range of sporting activities.”
Merlino told the Herald sun that if the claims were true, they would be “very, very concerning.”
