Greek local authorities protest at Athens' cash grab

Mayors and local authority trades unionists from municipalities all over Greece have converged in Athens to protest at the government’s ordering them to transfer local authority cash reserves to the Bank of Greece.

Some were unhappy that the measure was put in place by executive decree and was not subject to consultation or a vote.

“All Greeks, all mayors and all municipalities should help the Prime Minister to reach this vital deal with the country’s lenders, but Greece has been feeding on its own flesh for a long time now and not many pieces are left,” said the Mayor of Marathon Elias Psinakis.

A delegation met with political leaders inside the parliament, but while there may be some room for bargaining, any delay may be costly for Greece.
