The Spanish government has recalled its Ambassador to Venezuela for consultations. The measure comes as relations remain strained by ongoing attempts by Spanish officials and lawmakers to meddle in Venezuela’s internal affairs. President Nicolas Maduro has charged that the Rajoy administration is backing opposition groups that are attempting to destabilize the constitutional government of Venezuela, something that he will not permit. Foreign Minister Delcy Rodriguez also rebuked Spanish interventionism. On her Twitter account she wrote that “the Kingdom of Spain is ignoring its own history and has forgotten the lesson that it was defeated by our liberators 200 years ago.” She also said that “The (government) of Spain has overstepped its authority by failing to respect to Venezuela, its government and people.”
