A daring rescue by two Kinnelon Police officers saved one New Jersey woman’s life. She was found unconscious and stuck insider her overturned convertible which was just minutes away from exploding.
Gripping dash camera video from one police cruiser shows how one of the hero officers took off speeding just after 6 p.m. Thursday after getting word there was a crash. Just moments prior, a private citizen tipped off police to an erratic driver in the area.
When the recording officer pulled up to the scene, smoke was already coming out of a white 2006 Toyota Solara convertible, now flipped upside down. The officer runs over and shouts at the driver, but she’s knocked out cold.
“Can you hear me?” he can be heard yelling on the video.
Throughout most of the recording the driver’s horn is stuck on blast, and the smoking car is only gaining on the now two fast-acting officers at the scene. Kinnelon Police Officer Mark Ehrenberg and Officer Ricky Ferriola are credited for the woman’s rescue.
It took them two tense minutes to cut off the woman’s seat belt and pull her limp body from the wreck. About 30 seconds later the flames are visible, and an officer can be heard trying to revive the woman, who is now safely across the street.
She had to be hooked up to a defibrillator at the scene and CPR was administered.
Just 2 minutes and 30 seconds after the officers had removed the woman’s body from the wreck, a small explosion blew the back of the car off and the vehicle became engulfed in flames.
When asked why the Kinnelon Police wanted the public to see this video, Sgt. Chris Carbone said Saturday, “If it wasn’t for the citizen interaction by calling the police about an erratic driver, this woman who was driving, it would have been a fatal motor vehicle accident.”
As for the two police officers who put themselves in harms way to save the woman, Sgt. Carbone said, “A lot of times, we don’t think of our own safety doing this job.”
The Kinnelon Police Department has identified the woman they pulled from the wreck to be 45-year-old Dawn Milosky of Beachwood, N.J. She has been charged with driving while intoxicated, having an open container of alcohol in the vehicle, reckless driving and for failure to stay in the right lane.
She was airlifted from the scene to Morristown Medical Center on Thursday, but police say she is now doing okay.
