Drug trafficking is playing an increasing role in Peruvian political life. Following an attempt on the life of APRA party member Gerald Oropeza on April 2, yesterday the populist party moved to expelled him for his alleged ties to drug trafficking. Others accused of drug trafficking or shady financial dealings also have ties to the APRA, although such crimes extend well beyond the party. Although Peru is below the regional average in term of such offenses, they are nonetheless growing in number and the caliber of the weapons being used to perpetrate them. Rael Mora reports from Lima. teleSUR.
