Eleven Colombian soldiers were killed by FARC rebels despite a unilateral ceasefire declared by the guerrilla organization last December. The FARC said the attack was a response to intense ante-guerrilla operations in the southern Cauca region of the counrgy and said such operations are incongruent with the ongoing peace process. After the attack, President Juan Manuel Santos ordered the resumption of bombing raids against the FARC, which had been temporarily suspended. The FARC reiterated that the only way to end the hostilities is through a bilateral ceasefire. Many rights groups backed the demand and called for an intensification of the peace process.
