Australian surfer Sean Pollard was flown to Perth after having an arm and a hand torn off in a shark attack near Esperance in southern Western Australia.

23-year-old Pollard, a surfer from Bunbury, was attacked around 11 a.m. Thursday at Kelpids Beach in Wylie Bay, an isolated length of beach near Esperance by a great white 3-4.5m in length. Authorities said the victim was surfing alone but his girlfriend may have been on the beach.

The person who called the ambulance said the man had lost part of his arm at the elbow and the other at the wrist. He also suffered lacerations to his legs.

A police escort rushed blood to Jandakot Airport for transport to Esperance Hospital in case the victim needed blood transfusions before he was flown to Perth.

The Department of Fisheries said they caught a great white shark it believes attacked the surfer on Thursday. The department used two drumlines, baited hooks, to catch the shark, which is between three-4.5m in length. It was captured within an hour of setting up the drumlines. It will be killed humanely.

Authorities have tried to retrieve the victim’s surfboard from the water. Rangers have since closed the beach. Pollard’s friends have been showing their support over Facebook.
