Fighters jets from NATO’s air policing mission scrambled to intercept a second Russian Ilyushin-20 surveillance jet in NATO airspace over the Baltic Sea on Tuesday.
Two Canadian F-18 Hornet jets scrambled from the Siauliai Air Base in Lithuania to intercept an Ilyushin-20 flying over the Baltic Sea.
On Wednesday another Ilyushin-20 departed the Russian Baltic enclave of Kaliningrad and was intercepted by Danish F-16 jets before heading north towards Sweden, where it was intercepted by Swedish jets.
The Ilyushin-20 made another turn, entering Estonian airspace near the island of Saaremaa for under a minute before it was escorted away by Portuguese F-16s.
A Russian defense ministry spokesperson said that the intelligence-gathering plane had been on a training mission and had not breached Estonian airspace.
The Russian incursions occurred as Sweden continued to search for a Russian submarine reportedly sighted multiple times in its southern archipelago.
