At least one person was killed after a small aircraft crashed near the runway of a Colorado airport.

The aircraft, believed to be a single-engined Mooney, took off from the Boulder Municipal Airport at around 7:40 a.m. on Monday.

For unknown reasons, the plane crashed during takeoff.

Rescuers placed a sheet over wreckage after the fire was put out. The wreckage site is some 50 yards away from the nearest runway.

The National Transportation Safety Board and the Federal Aviation Administration have launched an investigation into the exact cause of the crash.
