A 58-year-old British man was paralyzed during a roller coaster ride in Blackpool, England last Friday.

Robert Sycamore and his 13-year-old great-nephew Harry Parlour were excited to be on the first ride that day of the Grand National rollercoaster at Pleasure Beach Amusement Park. The 70-year-old coaster is known for its tight turns and curves, things every roller coaster fan enjoys.

However, the forces generated by the sharp, sudden movements acted on Sycamore’s spine. The whiplash effects caused the vertebrae in his neck to become inflamed, effectively paralyzing him by the time the train rolled back into the depot. Sycamore was previously diagnosed with spondylitis, an inflammation of the vertebrae in the back. It isn’t known at this time if this contributed to his paralysis.

An amusement park official said there were no problems with the ride itself, which has entertained around half a million guests this year without incident.
