Brian Wargo was like a knight in shining armor. Well, maybe in a shiny wetsuit riding on a surfboard instead of a brave white steed.

But none of that makes him any less of a hero for McKenzie Clark, the friend he saved from a shark attack on Nov. 1st.

Wargo and Clark had gone out to hit the waves together and had already paddled out into the clear bright waters off the coast of Hawaii, when Wargo heard Clark scream. At first, they both thought that Clark had struck something but when Wargo looked back he saw his friend being lifted out of the water by a shark.

The shark bit down on Clark’s board and her left hand, tumbling the surfer off the back of her board, but Clark was still attached to her board by her ankle leash. The shark clenched its jaws into Clark’s board and began to drag it--and her--down into the water.

Brian swam over and began to pummel the shark with everything he had: fists, feet and his board. Finally the shark shuddered, let go of Clark’s board and wandered back into safer waters.

Clark was rushed to hospital and her hand was treated for the shark bite, which will probably leave scars, but at the moment she’s just happy to be alive.
