The US Air Force and Coast Guard have recovered the body of a pilot after his F-16 fighter jet crashed into the Gulf of Mexico on Thursday.

The F-16 fighter jet was based at Tyndall Air Force Base in northwest Florida. It was on a “two-ship” routine training mission with another QF-4 aircraft over the Gulf of Mexico, the Guardian reported.

The base lost contact with the F-16 pilot at about 9:15 a.m., NBC News reported. The pilot flying the QF-4 returned safely to base.

The jet crashed into the water about 60 miles south of Panama City in Florida, reported NBC News.

The name of the pilot is being withheld until his family have been notified, according to Reuters.
