Paraguayan authorities have charged a group of men with murder after they executed an indigenous woman accused of witchcraft.
While the exact date of the woman’s death remains unclear, local officials recently arrested and charged the nine men with first degree murder.
Adolfina Ocampos had been asked to tend to a sick woman in the village.
The patient’s sister eventually also fell ill and despite a year of care, neither woman’s condition improved under Ocampos’ ministration.
Villagers accused the 45-year-old of witchcraft and she was sentenced to death by a village elder, after, unsurprisingly, failing to prove her innocence under the infamous “trial by water” test.
The method sees the accused placed in water. If they float, then they’re considered guilty of witchcraft.
After a severe beating, the villagers brutally executed Ocampos. They tied her to a post and shot her with arrows, before burning her alive.
The nine men have admitted to participating in Ocampos’ murder, but believe they committed no wrong and merely carried out a just sentence.
