Convicted pedophile and murderer Philip John Smith was arrested in Brazil on Thursday after being spotted in a hostel in the Santa Teresa neighborhood of Rio de Janeiro.

Smith, 40, was allowed out of Waikato's Spring Hill prison in New Zealand last Thursday, on a three-day release. A few hours later he was on a plane from Auckland to Chile, travelling on a passport he had previously obtained under his birth name, Phillip John Traynor.

According to Stuff.co.nz, Smith may have externally helped with booking a flight to Chile and then when he decided to travel from Chile to Brazil to avoid extradition.

Once in Rio de Janeiro, he checked into the Cidade Maravilhosa hostel, where he shared a room with other three people.

From abroad, Smith sent five or six emails to his lawyer, asking him to publicly reassure the family of his victims that he posed no threat to their safety.

He was arrested after he was recognized by the hostel manager, who had seen his picture in the news.

A law expert quoted by the New Zealand Herald said Smith could start his journey back to New Zealand as early as tomorrow.

Smith was imprisoned in 1996 after he stabbed to death the father of a boy he had sexually molested.
