An innocent man wrongly convicted of rape was released from a Japanese prison last week after serving three-and-a-half years of a 12 year sentence.

The victim and eyewitnesses accused the man of sexually assaulting said victim numerous times between 2004 and 2008 in Osaka.

The man, who remains unnamed at the request of his lawyer, protested his innocence throughout the entire trial but was convicted in 2011.

However, this year in Sept the man requested a retrial.

Under questioning, the victim and the eyewitnesses confessed that they had lied about the rape. Prosecutors said they had found additional evidence to support their admissions. Based on their confessions, the man was released on parole until the date of the retrial, which is extremely rare for Japan.

The Osaka District Public Prosecutors Office said that they were very disappointed that this happened as it casts doubt on any criminal case with eyewitness testimony. They will be re-examining the man’s original trial and conviction.
