Protests have spread across the United States after a grand jury decided to not indict Darren Wilson, the white Ferguson, Missouri, police officer who fatally shot black teenager Michael Brown on August 9.

Protests against the failure to indict Wilson have spiralled out of control. Shops in Ferguson were looted, while heavy gunshots were fired.

In an interview with ABC, Officer Darren Wilson said he saw Michael Brown and Dorian Johnson walking along the double-yellow line on Canfield Drive. He asked the pair to walk on the sidewalk instead.

Wilson said Johnson ignored him and Brown walked towards his vehicle and swore at him. At that moment, Wilson noticed Brown had cigarillos in his hand. Believing Brown had been involved in a recent theft, he radioed for support.

Wilson said he tried to get out of the vehicle, but Brown slammed the door. Brown then leaned into the window with his head and arms and started throwing punches. Brown went for Wilson’s gun. Wilson pulled the trigger twice before successfully firing a shot the third time, which broke the glass window.

The shot surprised Brown, but he continued to attack Wilson. The officer fired another shot and Brown ran away. Brown’s right thumb was grazed at this time.

However, Dorian Johnson, said Wilson could not open the car door because it was too close to them. Wilson grabbed Brown around the neck through the open window and fired his gun at Brown instantly.

After the altercation by the vehicle, Wilson said he chased after Brown, who stopped at a light pole. The officer stopped running after running past two cars.

Brown turned and walked towards Wilson. Brown refused to stop after Wilson told him to get down. Wilson started backpedaling when Brown was about 15 feet away. He fired numerous shots at the teenager. A later investigation revealed that Wilson fired 10 times.

Johnson gave a different account. He said Brown ran away after Wilson exited his vehicle. Brown turned and held his hands up, but the officer kept shooting and finally killed Brown.

Brown’s body was about 150 feet away from Wilson’s vehicle. There was a trail of blood stretching 20 feet from Brown’s body, indicating the teenager had turned and approached Wilson.

Brown’s body was left on the street for four hours.

A private autopsy conducted at the request of Brown’s family showed that the teenager was shot at least six times: twice in the head and four times in the right arm. However, no wounds were found on the back of the teenager, contradicting Johnson’s account.
