The last thing the St. Louis metro area needs right now is another horrific murder that some say could be race-related, but sadly, that is what happened in the early hours of Sunday.

Two men, both originally from Bosnia, left a St. Louis bar at close to 1 a.m. on Sunday. As they drove home along Gravois Avenue, a group of teenage boys approached the car at an intersection and began damaging it. Witnesses said at least three of the teens were carrying hammers.

The driver, 32-year-old Zemir Begic, got out of the car to confront the teens who then attacked him, beating him savagely with the hammers.

The vehicle’s passenger, 49-year-old Suad Nuranjkovic, told police he fled to a parking lot on the other side of the road fearing the attackers had guns.

Waiting for help to arrive, Nuranjkovic was unable to stop the savage beating of his friend, who died several hours later at St. Louis University Hospital.
