Protests in Hong Kong wavered after Sunday and Monday’s police attacks.

Tuesday evening, five leaders of the Occupy Hong Kong movement apologized for the failure to paralyze the city’s government by occupying streets near the city’s headquarters. The unexpected violence and brutality of the Hong Kong police forced protesters off the streets they were attempting to control.

Joshua Wong and two other leaders of the Umbrella Movement have announced that they will go on a hunger strike until Beijing is willing to begin negotiating again. Many of the protest leaders who were arrested have been banned from returning to occupied areas.

CY Leung, the current chief executive of Hong Kong, scoffs at the idea and calls the hunger strikes ‘futile’. He says that no amount of resistance will bring universal suffrage to Hong Kong.

Meanwhile, in Britain an emergency meeting was called in the House of Commons to discuss the situation in Hong Kong and China’s decision to ban visas for UK lawmakers attempting to enter Hong Kong.
