An under-construction apartment building in downtown Los Angeles went up in flames early Monday, growing to an uncontrollable inferno that damaged nearby buildings and threatened traffic. Fire Department Captain Jamie Moore told the Los Angeles Times that the fire’s size and speed suggest it may have been deliberately lit.
The fire broke out around 1.20 a.m. and grew rapidly to consume most of a city block along Temple Street. “It looked like a bomb had just exploded,” fire department Captain Rick Godinez told the Times.
More than 250 firefighters attempted to bring the fire under control, but were unable to prevent it from engulfing almost all of Building A of the Da Vinci residential development.
Heat from the wall of fire was so intense, it shattered windows in nearby government buildings. Sections of two freeways were also temporarily closed off after scaffolding fell onto roadways.
The blaze ignited a secondary fine in an adjacent complex, damaging three floors. Firefighters were able to extinguish the smaller fire within 90 minutes.
A criminal investigation to determine what happened is underway.
There have been no reports of injuries of deaths.
