Moldovan police have arrested seven people suspected of smuggling uranium into Moldova by a train from Russia after months of investigations.

Police conducted a series of house searches in the capital of Chisinau and two other towns last week.

They confiscated 200 grams of uranium-238, which authorities said could have been used to make dirty bombs, and 1 kilogramme of mercury.

“After a preliminary examination we realized we were talking about Uranium-238, an extremely dangerous radioactive substance used to make ‘dirty’ nuclear bombs,” Ion Bodrug, head of an Interior Ministry investigative department, told a press conference, according to Reuters.

The destructive power of a dirty bomb would be measured in tons of TNT, whereas the destructive power of a nuclear bomb is measured in megatons. A dirty bomb would be used to scatter radioactive particles over an area comprising a few blocks to several square kilometres.

A dirty bomb also requires only a fraction of the uranium or plutonium needed to make a nuclear bomb. Its main purpose would be to cause fear and chaos, hence the nickname “weapon of mass disruption”.
