China said on Monday that it will begin sending soldiers to South Sudan next month, an announcement made on the same day that China National Petroleum said it had signed a memorandum of understanding with South Sudan to boost oil production in the war-torn country.

China will send 700 troops, including 13 women, to South Sudan to join a UN peacekeeping mission, Xinhua News reported. 180 Chinese troops will fly to South Sudan in January, while the rest will arrive in March by sea and air. The troops will bring drones, armoured personnel carriers, mortars and other weapons.

CNPC has a roughly 40 percent share in a joint venture developing oil fields in South Sudan. South Sudan signed an agreement with China’s state-run China National Petroleum Corporation in December to boost production in at least three oil exploration blocks.

CNPC said it would send engineering and service teams to South Sudan and conduct training on oil recovery technologies to help boost production, Reuters reported.

Oil is South Sudan’s major source of revenue, but production has decreased by a third since a civil war broke out nine months ago, the Wall Street Journal reported.
