Indonesian and neighboring countries continued their quest to locate the missing AirAsia flight QZ8501 after search operations were halted due to darkness on Sunday.
Although the wreckage has not been found, authorities believe the aircraft has already sunk to the bottom of the sea.
AirAsia flight QZ8501 lost contact with air traffic control at 6:24 a.m. local time amid dense storm clouds over the Java Sea. According to the BBC, AirAsia said the pilot of the Airbus A320-200 had asked for permission for a “deviation” from the flight path due to avoid the clouds. Indonesia’s transportation ministry said the pilot had requested permission to ascend to 38,000 feet.
Cumunolimbus clouds, extremely tall and large clouds associated with thunderstorms, can be found from 2,000 to 45,000 feet. Commercial aircrafts fly in the lower stratosphere, at about 30,000 to 39,000 feet.
Weather radar on aircraft allows pilots to detect storms from 100 miles away, giving them ample time to fly around or pass through storms. Pilots seldom fly above storms to avoid them.
Flying through a storm may lead to the freezing of pitot tubes, which are mounted on the aircraft to gauge airspeed. Malfunctioning pitot tubes caused Air France Flight 447 to crash in 2009, after its pilots lost control of the jetliner as the autopilot system disengaged.
