Mackenzie Matthews is a 34-year-old married mother who worked as a guidance counselor at an Ohio high school. She had sex with an 18-year-old boy in 2010, and years later he blabbed and she was indicted.
On Tuesday, a judge in Ohio’s aptly named Licking County sentenced Matthews to two years behind bars, but her victim doesn’t think she should go to prison and neither does his family.
The teacher-on-student action did not take place on school grounds and was consensual. The prosecutor noted that had Matthews waited four months for the teen to graduate, it wouldn’t have been a crime — just adultery.
But now, not only is Matthews going to jail, but she has also lost her teaching license and will have to register as a “tier three” sex offender, which means she’ll have to report to the local police station every 90 days for the rest of her life.
According to Ohio law, she could get out after just six months, but the judge told the courtroom he gave her jail time because too many teachers are doing too many students.
The judge said a message had to be sent: Student-teacher relationships are not OK and teachers involved will be punished.
What's your take? Is this a fair judgment for what's considered “sexual battery” in Ohio, or was the punishment excessive for what some might call a rather victimless crime?
