The International Fund For Animal Welfare (IFAW) is appealing for the public’s help for koalas that sustained severe burns in Australia’s bushfires.

Bushfires in Southern Australia, Victoria and New South Wales have devastated the homes of many koalas, many of whom sustained severe injuries gripping burning trees or fleeing from areas that have gone up in flames, according to the IFAW.

The organisation is asking people to make and donate simple mittens made of clean, 100% cotton to help the injured animals.

“Many koalas perish in bushfires, while the lucky ones that survive are often badly injured and need intensive treatment by vets and dedicated wildlife carers,” IFAW said.

Mittens made of old sheets or towels work just fine as long as they’re clean and made of 100% cotton. A pattern for how to make mittens that will fit the koalas can be found on the IFAW’s website.

“We expect koalas may come into the care of wildlife groups as the fire grounds are opened up to rescuers searching for injured animals,” the IFAW said. “Already koalas have come into care in Victoria and in South Australia firefighters and members of the public are reported to have helped displaced and exhausted koalas by providing water and a respite from the heat.”
