Ukraine officials and Russian-backed separatists have been trading accusations following the Tuesday attack on a passenger bus in eastern Ukraine that left 11 people dead.

Tensions have escalated in recent days, threatening to derail the truce that has been in place since December.

Eleven people died in Eastern Ukraine on Tuesday afternoon when a bus carrying civilians was attacked as it passed through a government checkpoint in the eastern town of Volnovakha.

Kiev said rebels attacked the bus using Grad rocket launchers while separatists said that distance meant they did not have the capability to launch such attacks. They blamed Kiev for the bus attack saying the vehicle was hit by small arms fire. They also denied any involvement in the attack.

In early hours of Tuesday, separatists launched attacks on Donetsk’s Sergei Prokofiev airport using Grad missile launchers.

The air traffic control tower, which has been battered by gunfire for months, collapsed, Ukrainian Armed Forces General Staff spokesman Vladyslav Selezniov confirmed with Interfax.

The bus attack resulted in the biggest loss of life in Ukraine so far this year. It is estimated that more than 4,700 people have been killed since the conflict began last April.
