A 20-year-man from Cincinnati, Ohio was arrested Wednesday for allegedly plotting an attack on the Capitol.

Christopher Lee Cornell was charged with attempting to kill a U.S. government official after using the alias Raheel Mahrus Ubaydah on Twitter to pledge support for extremist group Islamic State.

Last August, Cornell told an FBI informant in an online message that he wanted to launch a jihadist attack. The two met up in October and November, and Cornell also showed the informant his research into making bombs. According to the informant, Cornell had been saving money to purchase firearms and travel to Washington DC.

Cornell planned to attack the Capitol building using pipe bombs and then open fire on officials, lawmakers and assistants as they tried to escape.

On Wednesday, Cornell bought two semi-automatic rifles and 600 rounds of ammunition from a store in Cincinnati. He was arrested after stepping out of the store.

In an interview with broadcaster WKRC, Cornell’s father described him as a ‘mama’s boy’ and said he only converted to Islam a few months earlier.
