Searchers in Indonesia recovered bodies from the fuselage of the crashed AirAsia jet on Friday, a breakthrough in the search for the remaining victims.

An operational officer from Indonesia's National Search and Rescue Agency said six bodies had been retrieved from the interior of the cabin. This is due in part to the clearing skies and sea surface conditions, making it easier for the operation to proceed.

Rough undersea currents have prevented divers from going further inside the wrecked fuselage, so an operation to float the wreck is underway. By bringing the main part of the plane to the ocean’s surface, it it hoped that the remaining bodies can be found and turned over to their families.

The cause of AirAsia’s first fatal crash is not yet officially known, however preliminary data from the black box recording devices suggest the aircraft may have climbed too sharply and stalled, in an attempt to evade bad weather.
