A couple in the central Chinese province of Sichuan have successfully become pregnant despite the fact that the husband and wife share a high HLA compatibility. HLA, also known as the human leukocyte antigen, can cause recurrent miscarriages between couples who have a high compatibility.

The couple, surnamed Zhang, were married a little over a year ago and the wife became pregnant twice, each time miscarrying towards the beginning of her second trimester.

Initially, the wife visited her ob-gyn, but after examining her and pronouncing her healthy, the doctor referred the couple to a fertility specialist.

Blood tests were run and that was when the couple was informed of their HLA compatibility. The doctors reassured them they could help the couple get pregnant, first they’d collect the husband’s semen and after removing the antigens they would impregnate the wife.

The wife has now been successfully impregnated and things look good as she enters her third trimester.

Who knew getting knocked up could be so complicated?
