Britain's Royal Air Force scrambled fighter jets to intercept two Russian bombers flying near British airspace on Wednesday.

A defence analyst told BBC that Russia did not submit any flight plans and the transponders were switched off.

RAF Typhoon fighter jets were dispatched from RAF Lossiemouth in Scotland and RAF Coningsby in Lincolnshire. The jets tracked the two bombers along their flight paths. An RAF spokesperson said the mission lasted for 12 hours. Reports said the British and Russian aircraft got as close as 1,000 feet from each other.

The Russian bombers flew north past Scotland and around Ireland toward the English Channel before returning along the same route.

The incident disrupted civil aviation, but the authorities did not elaborate on the impact.

Russian military aircraft have been increasingly aggressive in the past months. Some security experts believe that the latest incident may be linked to the inquiry into the death of former-KGB spy Alexander Litvinenko.
