Brian Williams has come under some serious fire for totally lying about his account of a 2003 helicopter mission over Iraq. On Saturday, the NBC lead anchor announced that he will temporarily step down to avoid becoming a distraction.
In a note sent Saturday, he wrote:
"In the midst of a career spent covering and consuming news, it has become painfully apparent to me that I am presently too much a part of the news, due to my actions. As Managing Editor of NBC Nightly News, I have decided to take myself off of my daily broadcast for the next several days, and Lester Holt has kindly agreed to sit in for me to allow us to adequately deal with this issue. Upon my return, I will continue my career-long effort to be worthy of the trust of those who place their trust in us."
Now it looks like Williams may also have misremembered (lied) about things he saw during Katrina in the French Quarter in 2005, like the dead body he saw floating face-down outside his hotel.
The hotel probably wasn’t ‘overrun with gangs’ like he said and now it looks like his case of dysentery may have just been disingenuous. NBC has launched an internal investigation as has rival ABC.
No doubt Tom Brokaw is mad as hell. Wonder what Katie Couric is up to these days? Don’t sweat it though Brian, there are plenty of career opportunities for journalists that pay attention to the details.
