A former Korean Air vice president who drew worldwide ridicule last year when she ordered a passenger jet back to its gate after becoming enraged at the manner in which she was served macadamia nuts is headed to prison for one year for violating aviation safety law.

Heather Cho Hyun-ah was sentenced February 12 in a Seoul court room for the December 5 tantrum in which she berated and assaulted the flight's chief air steward Park Chang-jin who had, without request, brought her macadamia nuts served in a bag rather than in a bowl. During sentencing the judge noted Cho's appeared insincere in her apologies, as she defended her actions telling the court she lived for her work.

The episode reportedly deeply shamed her father, Korean Air chairman father, Cho Yang-ho and shocked and disgusted most ordinary Koreans.

Many large businesses in South Korea, a country with a rigid social hierarchy, are family-run, and these elites often view themselves as untouchable. Ms Cho could consider herself lucky — prosecutors were seeking three years.
