After months of investigation, Mexican federal police arrested Servando 'La Tuta' Gomez, a primary school teacher turned drug lord, without firing a single shot in the early hours of Friday.
A number of houses in the Mexican city of Morelia which police believed Knights Templar cartel leader Servanda 'La Tuta' had used was under surveillance for months.
Police honed in on a house after seeing Gomez's accomplices bring in cakes, soft drinks and food to celebrate the drug kingpin's birthday on February 6.
Gomez was arrested after leaving the house alone at around 4 a.m. on Friday. He was wearing a baseball cap and a scarf to make himself less identifiable.
In the operation, police also arrested eight bodyguards and seized a grenade launcher, three grenades, a machine pistol, four assault rifles, and seven handguns.
Gomez's younger brother Flavio, allegedly a financier of the drug cartel, was also arrested in Merida on Friday.
However, security experts believe Gomez's arrest would not bring too much change. The power of the Knights Templar cartel has waned in the years, giving an opportunity for smaller, regional groups to compete for dominance.
Unlike other drug cartel leaders who prefer to stay out of the limelight, Gomez constantly talked to media and published videos on social media.
