The Mexican government is protesting against what it called the U.S. police’s use of excessive force against Mexican immigrants, after a second unarmed Mexican immigrant was shot dead by police in two weeks.
The protests come after Mexican immigrant Rubén García Villalpando’s was shot dead by Grapevine, Texas, police officer Robert Clark on February 20.
Clark was dispatched to check on an burglar alarm last Friday in Grapevine, Texas. It was a false alarm, but as the officer was about to leave, he noticed Villalpando’s pickup truck stopped in the driveway of the parking lot.
Villalpando drove out of the parking lot, ignoring the police car’s emergency lights and sirens. The officer gave chase, which continued on to the busy State Highway 121 before Villalpando finally stopped on the shoulder. Despite warnings to stop, the unarmed immigrant approached the police with his hands in the air.
Clark then fired two shots at Villalpando, who slumped to the ground. He was later pronounced dead at the hospital.
Villalpando is the second Mexican national slain by police in less than two weeks following the death of Antonio Zambrano Montes on February 10. The Mexican government expressed anger over the four-day delay in notifying the Consulate after the fatal shooting.
