Donuts on ice: guys lose truck in river, cause massive police rescue operation

Two young men in their 20s have turned themselves into police after a truck was found submerged in the Toms River, police said.
For about 10 hours on Sunday, New Jersey State Police, Toms River and Pine Beach Departments had no idea what they were dealing with in the freezing Toms Rivers waters. Just after midnight, someone called police saying they spotted a pickup truck on the ice doing donuts.
Police investigated, but didn’t see anything. In the morning, a helicopter found the vehicle and marked the spot with a buoy and launched an extensive recovery operation.
According to the passenger’s uncle John Fackenthal, “They went on the ice, and police shined their light on them, and they took off on the ice - turned lights off of and took off.”
Fackenthal says his nephew got out first as his friend drove further onto the frozen river. He eventually got out of the pickup before it sank.
“They heard a crack, and got out of the car, and couldn’t get the dog out, so the dog is still under,” Fackenthal added.
Both men turned themselves into police. Fackenthal said the young men have learned their lesson. He also added that he wasn’t surprised as he did the same when he was young.
“You’re young and stupid, so you don’t think about these things, there were times when there were 300 cars out there,” he says.
