Mexican security officials have arrested Omar Trevino-Morales, the leader of the Zetas drug cartel authorities said on Wednesday.
Alejandro Trevino-Morales, also known as "Omar" or "Z42", was arrested around 4 a.m. in Garza Garcia, Nuevo Leon—which is part of the Monterrey metropolitan area. The operation was a joint effort between the Mexican Federal Police and the Mexican Army.
The drug trafficking Zetas group are credited for rising crime rates in Mexico, often over turf battles with other drug cartels. The Zetas group began with 34 Mexican Special Forces deserters—first hired to protect former Gulf Cartel leader Osiel Cardenas-Guillen.
Omar Trevino took over as leader of the bloody Zetas group after his brother Miguel Trevino, the previous leader, was arrested in July 2013. The United States Department of State was offering up to a $5 million dollar reward for information leading to the arrest and/or conviction of Trevino Morales.
Just days before Mexican police detained Morales, they arrested Servando Gomez, leader of a the Knights Templar drug cartel.
