The trial of surviving Boston Marathon bomber Dzhokhar Tsarnaev got underway Wednesday almost two years after the twin April 15, 2013 explosions that killed three people and injured more than 260 others.

Tsarnaev and his deceased brother Tamerlan are accused of planting two pressure cooker devices that ripped through spectators gathered near the finish line of the race on Boylston Street.

The 10 female and eight members of the jury, including 12 jurors and six alternates, listened as the defense and prosecution made their opening statements.

They heard from the prosecution how Tsarnaev carried a backpack containing a shrapnel-filled pressure cooker bomb to a spot just outside the Forum Restaurant.

And placed it right behind a row of spectators that included several children, one of whom was killed by the blast.

Federal prosecutors also read out part of a message Tsarnaev allegedly scrawled on the inside of a boat he hid in following a police chase shortly before his capture, in which he detailed how he believed death would lead him to paradise.

The defense’s tactic, meanwhile, appears intent not on proving Tsarnaev’s innocence, but on swaying the jury on whether he deserves to die for his role in the deadly blasts.

The trial is expected to last three to four months.
