A car accident at the Shenzhen Bao’an International Airport in China’s Guangdong Province has left nine people dead and injured at least 27 others.
The accident occurred around 3:32 p.m. when a red sedan ran over a large crowd of pedestrians near Terminal 3 of the airport, killing five people on the scene. Four other people later died in the hospital.
A 24-year-old female driver allegedly lost control of her vehicle after she got nervous because a car kept honking at her. She’s been taken in by the police for questioning.
Initial investigation showed around 30 people standing on a driveway to watch and take pictures of planes landing and taking off when the out-of-control vehicle slammed into them. The driveway is part of a road not designed for pedestrians.
The airport said that it will add warning signs and increase patrols to the driveway in the future.
From a parking lot close to the accident, CCTV caught the moment when two people fell from the driveway.
