A Tacoma high school is broke and getting ready to kiss some serious Chinese butt as it welcomes up to 50 Chinese students who will each fork over $10,000 in tuition for the chance to attend a crappy U.S. public school.

The students will attend Foss High School for a full year next fall, after an agreement between the Tacoma school district and a private Chinese company.

The district and the company both say the goal is to promote cultural and educational exchange. The school district sold out to Beijing-based Tower Bridge Group on Feb. 27.

The $500,000 will cover the cost of educating the Chinese students, who will not receive state, local or federal dollars to support their education, Tacoma Deputy Superintendent Josh Garcia claims.

But as Tacoma usually spends $13,000 per student, one can’t help but wonder who’s going to cover the shortfall?

The Tacoma school district is struggling with a decreasing student count of 30,000 students, down from 33,000 in 2003.
