On Wednesday John Marshall, 52, drove to his lawyer's office in Fort Myers, Florida, in a pickup truck with the dead body of his neighbor laying in the back. The lawyer, Robert Harris, called 911, then explained his client's story to police.
Marshall and his neighbor Ted Hubbell had been arguing over Marshall's construction job on an empty lot, where he was covering tortoise holes and had a porta-potty.
Marshall says Hubbell was threatening him, but neighbors say Hubbell was a friendly and peaceful man, and neighbor Jill Hammer told WINK News that it was Hubbell who said he thought Marshall was nuts.
Indeed, neighbors from Marshall's last residence also recalled him as aloof.
Marshall also has a pending felony assault charge for hitting a man with his truck during a dispute over a parking spot, last year.
But, according to Marshall's version of events, Hubbell approached him peacefully, then pistol-whipped him in the jaw without warning. Marshall lost a tooth and got two broken thumbs, injuries he claims to have sustained in the fight.
But Marshall says he got the upper hand, took Hubbell's gun and shot Hubbell to death. Then, he drove Hubbell's body to the lawyer's office, saying his lawyer was the only person he could trust.
Florida being Florida, John Marshall is a free man, while police continue to investigate the scene of Ted Hubbell's death.
