Japan’s prime minister, Shinzo Abe and the ruling Liberal Democratic Party have put up a constitutional barrier to gay marriage in the country after a Tokyo ward announced in February that it plans to recognize same sex couples. Some lawmakers have also attempted to revise Japan’s current constitution.
Japan’s constitution does not actually rule out same sex marriage as the wording states that marriage is “based only on the mutual consent of both sexes.” Which is downright ambiguous when you phrase it that way.
But PM Abe and the LDP are concerned about how the foundation of families in Japan are defined and claim that gay marriage would only aggravate Japan’s falling birthrate.
Apparently, Abe doesn’t understand that gay couples can’t biologically reproduce with each other anyway, regardless of whether or not they are legally married. So what’s his point?
By not legalizing gay marriage in Japan, gay couples there will continue facing the usual set of problems faced by other gay couples around the world.
For instance, couples usually have difficulties renting apartments, visiting each other in the hospital, and complications in the transfer of inheritance when partners pass away.
But hey! It’s nice that Japan is finally addressing the question of gay marriage, finally. Right?
