A standoff between Springfield, Missouri police officers and William Williams ended Monday with the suspect and his two children dead.
Springfield police responded to a report of an armed man threatening his family at the Lake Shore Apartments around 9:00 p.m Sunday night.
When officers arrived at 9:30, they encountered an armed William Williams who was in his apartment with his 4-year-old son and 2-year-old daughter. The Sunday night standoff didn't end until Monday afternoon.
Police Lieutenant Eric Reece said at a press conference that the bomb squad deployed robots as a precaution. At around noon, tear gas was used to secure the scene. Utilities were cut off prior to police entering the residence.
When police entered, they found Williams, dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot, as well as the dead bodies of his two children.
Williams had worked for the Missouri State Highway Patrol as a civilian from 1988 - 1991 according to state records. An investigation into the deaths is underway.
