Nobel laureate Joseph Stiglitz is a highly influential voice on income inequality. In his 2012 book "The Price of Inequality", he made a compelling argument that the wealth gap is not good for the wider economy. Since then, inequality has worsened but at least, he says, "there's much more attention to the problem".
Joseph Stiglitz is concerned about the current state of Western economies. "An economy that doesn't deliver, that doesn't produce income growth for a majority of their citizens is a failed economy", he tells FRANCE 24's Markus Kalsson. "In those terms, America's economy and many economies in Europe are failed economies".
