Former Navy SEAL Mike Day is not your ordinary veteran. Twenty-year SEAL veteran Day was quite literally shot to pieces during his final tour of Iraq, but has made a remarkable recovery.

And he is now taking part in an Ironman to help raise funds for the people who helped him recover from his incredible ordeal.

It all happened back in 2007 when Day was acting as point man in a raid on a property in Fallujah.

First into the room, Day was confronted by four enemy fighters, who duly opened fire.

His rifle shot from his hand, Day pulled out his handgun and started shooting, killing one fighter and hitting another who was carrying a grenade, which then exploded less than 10 feet from him.

A still dazed Day then woke up, and proceeded to gun down the remaining two enemy combatants.

And if that wasn’t enough, Day then got to his feet and walked to the medevac helicopter, even though he had been shot 16 times.

Day was hit a total of 27 times. Eleven of the shots hitting his body armor and another 16 his body. He was hit in the stomach, shoulder, buttocks, scrotum and hand.

Day spent sixteen days in hospital recovering, during which time he lost 55 pounds.

It’s been a long road to recovery for him, but now he’s aiming to give back by raising funds for Carrick Brain Centers, an organization that helps vets suffering from PTSD.
